Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to know before starting Level 5?
You should be comfortable with present, future, passé composé, and imparfait. You can narrate past events, describe people, and handle daily conversations. If you’ve completed Level 4 in our program, you’re ready. Otherwise, take our free placement test.
What is the conditional tense and why does it matter?
The conditional lets you express wishes (“I would like…”), hypotheticals (“If I had more time, I would…”), and polite requests (“Could you…”). It’s essential for natural-sounding French and is heavily tested in the TEF/TCF speaking and writing sections. Level 5 is where most students go from “functional” French to “expressive” French.
Am I almost ready for TEF/TCF after Level 5?
Almost — Level 6 is the final foundation level, after which you move into dedicated exam preparation. The conditional tense you learn in Level 5 is one of the most important grammar structures for the exam. After Level 6, most students do 3–6 months of focused TEF/TCF prep.
Is Level 5 the hardest level?
Many students find the jump from Level 4 to Level 5 the most challenging — you’re moving from concrete topics (daily life, past events) to abstract ones (opinions, hypotheticals, culture). But it’s also where French becomes the most rewarding. You’ll start having real conversations about ideas, not just situations.
Can I take Level 5 online?
Yes — online and in-person classes follow the exact same curriculum with the same native French teachers. Online runs via Zoom.
