Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to know before starting Level 4?
You should be comfortable with present tense, future tense, and the passé composé. You can discuss plans, describe your job, and handle travel situations. If you’ve completed Level 3 in our program, you’re ready. Otherwise, take our free placement test.
What's the difference between passé composé and imparfait?
The passé composé describes completed actions (“I went to Paris”), while the imparfait describes ongoing states or habits in the past (“I was living in Paris” or “I used to go every summer”). Level 4 teaches you when to use each — and how to combine them naturally in storytelling. This is one of the most important grammar milestones in French.
I learned French in school years ago — is Level 4 the right restart point?
Possibly — Level 4 is a common re-entry point for people who once knew French but haven’t used it in years. If you remember basic conjugation and can hold a simple conversation, Level 4 might be right. Take our free placement test to be sure, or contact us to discuss.
How close am I to being TEF/TCF ready?
After Level 4, you have 2 more foundation levels (5 and 6) before moving into dedicated exam preparation. Most students targeting CLB 7 complete all 6 levels (about 6 months) then do 3–6 months of TEF/TCF prep. You’re well on your way — the grammar you learn in Level 4 is heavily tested in the exam.
Can I take Level 4 online?
Yes — online and in-person classes follow the exact same curriculum with the same native French teachers. Online runs via Zoom with 3 time slots available. You can switch between formats if your schedule changes.
