SLE French Exam Preparation — Pass Your Government Language Evaluation
Private and semi-private classes with native French teachers, tailored to the Second Language Evaluation. We prepare you for all three SLE components — oral, reading, and writing. Online or in-person in Vancouver.
What Is the SLE (Second Language Evaluation)?
The SLE is the French proficiency test used by the Government of Canada to evaluate federal employees and candidates for bilingual positions. It’s administered by the Public Service Commission (PSC) and tests three skills:
Written Expression
65 multiple-choice questions testing grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and proper French usage in a professional context.
Reading Comprehension
60 multiple-choice questions testing your ability to understand French texts — memos, reports, emails, and workplace documents.
Oral Proficiency
A live interview with an evaluator assessing your ability to communicate in French — from basic conversations to discussing complex workplace topics.
Each component is graded independently with a letter level: A (basic), B (intermediate), or C (advanced). Your results form a three-letter linguistic profile (e.g., BBB, CBC, CCB) that determines which bilingual positions you qualify for. Most federal bilingual positions require BBB. This means intermediate proficiency in all three components.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SLE and who needs to take it?
The Second Language Evaluation (SLE) is the French proficiency test required by the Government of Canada for bilingual positions in the federal public service. You may need it when applying for a bilingual job, being appointed to a bilingual position, or maintaining your language profile for career advancement.
What level do I need to pass?
It depends on the position. Most bilingual government jobs require BBB — intermediate proficiency in all three components (oral, reading, writing). Senior roles may require CBC or CCC. Your job posting or HR department will specify the exact linguistic profile required.
How long does it take to prepare for the SLE?
It depends on your starting level and target. Going from A to B typically takes 3–5 months of regular private sessions. B to C can take 5–8 months. If you’re retaking after a near-miss, focused preparation on your weak component(s) can take as few as 4–8 sessions. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after assessing your current level.
Do you offer group classes for SLE preparation?
No — SLE preparation is private or semi-private only. Every government employee has a different target profile, different weak areas, and different timelines. Private sessions ensure your preparation is 100% relevant to your specific evaluation.
Can I prepare for just one component (e.g., only oral)?
Absolutely. Many students come to us needing to improve just one component — typically the oral evaluation, which most candidates find the most challenging. We’ll focus your sessions entirely on that area, including mock interviews and targeted feedback.
Can I take SLE preparation online?
Yes — all our SLE preparation is available online via Zoom. Most of our government clients across Canada train online. If you’re in Vancouver, in-person sessions at our Gastown location are also available.
